Assessing the relative importance of managed crops and semi-natural grasslands as foraging habitats for breeding lesser kestrels Falco naumanni in southeastern Italy

چکیده
Farmland habitats host important populations of several threatened bird species. So far, how to reconcile farmland management with the maintenance viable these taxa is a major challenge for conservation biology. Southeastern Italy hosts ca 7000 pairs breeding lesser kestrels Falco naumanni, representing one European strongholds this small colonial raptor concern. We firstly assessed relative importance managed crops versus semi-natural grasslands in determining local abundance at landscape scale, and we successively studied foraging habitat preferences smaller spatial scale. Surveys birds were associated land-use collection 191 homogeneous sampling parcels from 14 plots 16 km2 each, uniformly distributed over 2400 area. Each plot was visited six times during 2017 season (May–July). Land-use markedly changed along season, unripe cereals being dominant May, while harvested cereal prevailed July. did not affect kestrel distribution early more abundant greater proportion lower grassland late season. In accordance, analysis within showed that May used proportionally their availability. June July, than expected availability, significantly avoided. Our landscape-scale thus indicates are much less comparison mid parts suggesting may be able take advantage crop practices other priority.

Characteristics of loci and individuals are associated with germline microsatellite mutation rates in lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni).
Although microsatellites are one of the most popular tools in genetic studies, their mutational dynamics and evolution remain unclear. Here, we apply extensive pedigree genotyping to identify and analyze the patterns and factors associated with de novo germline mutations across nine microsatellite loci in a wild population of lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni). A total of 10 germline mutations ev...
متن کاملDoes land irrigation actually reduce foraging habitat for breeding lesser kestrels? The role of crop types
The lesser kestrel is a Globally Threatened Species which large decline has been related to recent agricultural changes in European pseudo-steppes. Irrigation is considered as one of the major threats for this and other steppe birds, but the actual effects of irrigation on foraging habitat selection have been scarcely examined. We studied the selection of traditional dry cereal farming and irri...
متن کاملThe importance of semi-natural landscape structures in an agricultural landscape as habitats for stenotopic spiders
The development of agricultural landscapes during the last decades has been characterized by an increase in management intensity, and a consequent decrease in the number and size of natural and semi-natural habitats. As a result, isolation of populations of stenotopic species of forests, shores, heathers, etc., has increased. This is a serious problem, especially for smaller invertebrates with ...
متن کاملGone with the wind: Seasonal trends in foraging movement directions for a central-place forager
Lesser kestrels Falco naumanni are migratory central-place foragers that breed in dynamic arable landscapes. After arriving from migration, kestrels have no knowledge of the distribution of crops, and consequently prey, around their colony. The energy demand of pairs increases as breeding season progresses, but at the same time prey abundance, and their knowledge on prey distribution, also incr...
